Sanders to push employee ownership bill

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is introducing a bill to provide assistance to workers who want to form their own businesses.

Sanders was joined at a press conference this morning by representatives of worker-owned businesses that have found success in Vermont. Companies like Gardeners Supply, which along with it's retail outlets, has a thriving catalog and on-line business based in Vermont.

"I can safely say without employee ownership, Gardeners Supply and our approximate 225 year-round positions would no longer be a Vermont-based company.  In fact some of those positions in this country in areas like customer service and manufacturing may no longer be in this country," said Jim Feinson with Gardener's Supply.

Sanders bill is aimed at making it easier for employee-ownership groups to form -- either through stock ownership plans or worker-owned cooperatives.
