Police: No signs of trauma in St. J child's death

Posted: Updated:
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. - Police continue to investigate the death of a young boy who died in St. Johnsbury this weekend.

Police on Monday identified the child as 22-month-old Mason Keithan. Investigators say the little boy died unexpectedly around 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Vermont State Police were called to the scene of an apartment building on Mountain View Drive in St. Johnsbury for reports of an unresponsive toddler, but Keithan was pronounced dead by paramedics before state police arrived.

Neighbors WCAX-TV spoke to Monday reported hearing adults screaming and crying coming from the apartment around the time the child died.  They say no one has returned to that apartment since Saturday.

State police say the infant's autopsy is complete and it does not show any signs of physical trauma. The medical examiner is awaiting results of the toxicology tests before determining how the toddler died.

State police are calling this an active death investigation.
