Sanders to press legislation on VA services

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, will be pressing his plans for reforming the Department of Veterans Affairs this week.

The legislation aims to improve accountability and insure timely medical services at the VA. It would also give veterans who can't get appointments, the option of going to community health centers or private doctors.

"What I hope very much is that we, Congress, can overcome the tendency to politicize everything and in this case not make vets into political footballs, but in fact work together to address the problems on behalf of veterans in this country," said Sanders.

Though Sanders has called the scandal over wait times at some VA facilities "reprehensible," he maintains that most veterans are well-cared for by the VA.
