Road checkpoints this week for commercial drivers

Posted: Updated:

If you drive a commercial vehicle through Chittenden County, DMV inspectors will be watching you.

Road Check 2014 kicks off Tuesday and goes through Thursday. It's a joint effort between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The DMV will be stopping vehicles around the clock at checkpoints on Interstate 89 and Route 7. Inspectors say the goal is to keep commercial drivers safe.

"We could stop them, we'll take a look at the driver’s credentials, the carrier’s credentials, the condition of the vehicle, how is the load secure, based on that information i will determine what level of inspection we'll do," said Captain Jake Elovirta of the Vermont DMV.

The Vermont DMV says it will also be checking for driver fatigue, which is one of the leading causes of commercial vehicle accidents. Last year, the DMV says it stopped 2,500 vehicles. 250 warranted closer scrutiny.
