BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont middle school is celebrating its new American chestnut tree nursery.
The project grew out of a class at Mount Anthony Union Middle School in Bennington. The Bennington Banner reports students planted seven seedlings and 44 seeds of a blight-resistant strain of chestnut at the start of May.
The seeds have been bred over multiple generations and were acquired from the American Chestnut Foundation.
The 120-foot-high trees will be resistant to the chestnut blight that drove the species to the brink of extinction during the first half of the 20th century.
