Free haircuts for cancer survivors

Posted: Updated:

A new haircut was on the top of Judy Tonnemacher’s "to-do" list Tuesday.

"My hair finally grew back so it is fun to have it done," said Tonnemacher.

And for the breast cancer survivor it came for free.

"I had a double mastectomy and am almost through with it, I just have one more surgery to go," said Tonnemacher.

The Supercuts in South Burlington was just one of a number of salons across our region giving folks who have fought the disease a new look at no cost.

"She is a rock star, she is awesome, I feel like she just has one of those go-getter attitudes and something as tragic as cancer won't bring her down," said Lorrain Boulter, stylist.

Boulter often sees a dozen or more clients on her busy days, but she admits the ones she'll help on this "day of beauty" are different. She says she's happy to volunteer her time and talents with hopes of bringing them a little joy.

"I know if I am having a bad hair day, I know I am going to be in a bad mood. If you give someone a great haircut and they're walking out with a big smile you know that you could have just made their month," said Boulter.

Tonnemacher is still awaiting breast reconstruction but it's not slowing her down. She's excited about her cut and wants other survivors to know when their hair grows back, they shouldn't think twice about heading for the hairstylist.

"It is a good experience having your haircut instead of a wig on now that it is all grown back," said Tonnemacher.

All the tips from Tuesday are going to help patients at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

"I think it is great, for them to get money for cancer, I think it is a good thing to do and I would like to volunteer at the hospital in the cancer center when I am all over, when my surgeries are done," said Tonnemacher.

And she'll get to do it with a great new look.

Supercuts locations in Plattsburgh, NY, Watertown, NY South Burlington, Middlebury and Williston are offering up the new "hairdos" at no cost until 8 p.m.
