Rare snake gets some habitat help

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Several Vermont agencies are partnering to help out a rare snake species.

They're creating habitat near a truck weigh station on Interstate 91 in Guilford for North American racers, a black, non-venomous snake found in just a few towns in southeast Vermont.

The state Fish and Wildlife Department says racers are a threatened species in Vermont.

The racers were discovered near the site where an old truck weigh station was scheduled to be rebuilt and expanded.

The agency partnered with the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and the Vermont Agency of Transportation on the project.

Rocks and boulders have been used to build places for the racers to hibernate. Areas also have been created for them to warm up, move and feed at the Roaring Brook Wildlife Management Area.
