Vernon works out details for sheriff's enforcement

Posted: Updated:
VERNON, Vt. (AP) - The town of Vernon has finalized a contract with the Windham County sheriff's department to patrol the Vermont community after the local police department is disbanded.

Sheriff Keith Clark says he expects a smooth hand-off when his department begins to provide law enforcement coverage on July 1.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports the $231,624 contract between the town and the sheriff's department provides for a one-week transitional period starting June 24 during which sheriff's deputies will begin answering emergency calls while the seven-member Vernon Police Department closes out its business.

Vernon is the home of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, which is shutting down at the end of the year. The town is facing a significant loss of tax revenue.
