Sanders brokers VA agreement

WASHINGTON - Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has forged an agreement for a bipartisan bill that will help veterans get government-paid medical care outside Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics.

The proposal follows revelations of extended waiting times for veterans to get care at some facilities around the country. Senator Sanders, who chairs the Veterans Affairs Committee, reached the deal with Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

"So reaching a compromise among people who look at the world very differently is not easy, but right now we have a crisis on our hands and it's imperative that we deal with that crisis," said Sanders, addressing lawmakers Thursday.

Under the plan, veterans who experience long waits for VA appointments will be able to use private doctors enrolled in Medicare or other government programs.
