Gun accident a close call for Burlington residents

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Police say a Burlington man accidentally fired his gun into a neighbor's apartment.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. Thursday at a house on Maple Street. Police say Alexander Hogan, 23, was clearing his 9 mm handgun inside the living room of his first floor apartment.  Officials say he accidentally discharged a round into the ceiling. Nobody was injured but police say it was a narrow miss for the upstairs residents.  Police say a consent search of Hogan's apartment also turned up marijuana and other drug paraphernalia.

"I don't know all the circumstances, certainly not a safe situation to be in exercising better gun safety would have been a better answer," said Sgt. Jonathon Young, Burlington Police Department.

While on the scene police say they also found Hogan had more than an ounce of marijuana, a pot plant and drug paraphernalia so he picked up a possession charge, too.

He was cited into court on reckless endangerment and possession of marijuana charges.
