Police investigation continues for missing Vt. woman found dead

Posted: Updated:
Police confirmed last week that a body found in Proctor was Maryann Foster. She'd been missing for more than three months.

The search for Maryann Foster launched a multi-agency effort that included a dive team search and canine units combing Otter Creek near her home. Tom Witham, Foster's boyfriend, expressed hope that his longtime girlfriend was still alive. Now he faces life without her and still has many unanswered questions.

This winter Witham was waiting for an answer as to where his girlfriend of 16 years who had been missing since February 24 could possibly be. Then, last Friday he said his heart dropped.

"I was coming home coming around the corner and the Sheriff and the State Police investigator Dan Elliot was on the corner," said Witham.

"I had a feeling they had something to tell me," said Witham.

Workers at this hydro-electric plant in Proctor say they were just working a regular day when across the water at the bank they spotted a body.

"We were preparing to do some dredging in the river and me and Gino Ballestra were standing on the bridge looking over talking about our work and we noticed a body lying on the bank," said Tom Christman, discovered body.

Police say Witham is the last known person to have seen Foster. They had dinner together on February 24 at her Proctor home. He left that evening and after making multiple phone calls to her that went unanswered, he reported her missing two days later. Witham was questioned by police and again on Friday Witham helped investigators identify Foster.

"They asked me if she had any tattoos and I told them she has a small one," said Witham.

A violet on her right hip confirmed that Witham now had the answer to whether his girlfriend was dead or alive.

"Well...that wasn't the closure I wanted," said Witham.

Witham's home is now lined with sympathy cards. He tells us the outpouring of love and support is comforting, but he is still wondering how exactly Foster died. He tells us she was a bit sad during the long winter, but rules out the possibility she took her own life.

"She was sick of shoveling snow, sick of the cold. But I wouldn't say something like this would take place," said Witham.

Where her body was found was almost a mile from her Meadow Street home and investigators say she left all of her belongings behind, including her shoes. Law enforcement told WCAX they continue to investigate, although do not suspect anything suspicious.

A toxicology report will be available in 4 to 6 weeks.
