War re-enactments this weekend

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont's role in the Revolutionary War is acted out this weekend.

Saturday and Sunday the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum is recreating a colonial militia encampment of 1776 called "The Retreat from Canada." It's re-enacting colonial troops retreating from the British north of the border.

Activities include demonstrations of tactics and learning marching methods used by colonial troops. Re-enactors say this is an important part of Vermont's history which is often overlooked.

"There was a dispute whether who owned what land. Whether we were part of New York or part of New Hampshire, and this dispute really caused Vermont to be in this state of flux until finally after independence it was worked out and Vermont joined the union in 1791," said Dan O’Neil, with Ethan Allen Homestead Museum.

Viewing of the re-enactment is included with the price of admission to the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum.
