Champ Run hits its stride

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, Vt. - The summer sun made for a hot fundraising run in Charlotte Sunday.

They run for the cash in the annual Champ Run -- a race in Charlotte that raises money for the local elementary and middle school.

"It raises money for the Charlotte Central School, which is where I go to school," said CCS student Ben Blackmoore.

The races and raffle ticket sales provide the primary fundraising source for PTO efforts. "With raffle tickets, race registration and our very generous corporate sponsors, we can sometimes range in the $5-7 thousand range for one day," said PTO Co-chair Mandy Koskinen.

Co-Principal Audrey Boutaugh says the school will use the money to fund special curriculum and initiatives. "All the proceeds from this event will support school activities, whether it's grant funds that teachers ask for, or other activities after school," she said. "Some children like to take cooking classes or it may have something like a science activity and it helps teachers with activities that they'd like to do during the school day to support their classrooms."
Students like Ben Blackmore support the race because it ensures the school can continue to fund their favorite activities. "It's just important that the school gets more money so they can do other cool events like this," he said.

Sunday was a record number of runners -- 272 -- and 50 more than ever before.
