Fear of ticks no reason for kids not to enjoy outdoors

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - A reminder for parents to check their kids for ticks.

Lyme Disease is transmitted by deer ticks that feed April through August.  A daily tick check is recommended for everyone who spends some time outside.  But while checking is important, doctors say don't keep your kids inside because you fear Lyme Disease.  Getting it is actually quite rare.

"If you are bit by a tick, even in Vermont where Lyme Disease is present, your risk of getting Lyme Disease is on the order of one percent.  That's a one percent chance from a tick bite," said Pediatrician Dr. Joe Hagan.
