Vermont VA hospital performs better than national average

Posted: Updated:

A new audit by the Department of Veterans Affairs shows that the VA Medical Center in White River Junction is performing better than the national average when it comes to wait times for appointments.

The audit examined more than 700 hospitals and large outpatient clinics. In White River, about 98 percent of patients were able to schedule an appointment within 30 days, but the goal is 14 days and officials in White River say there are areas that need improvement.

"Sleep study, for example, and dermatology. So we do a couple of things when we identify that access is not adequate. One, is we will look at our internal resources and perhaps add additional clinics and things of that sort. We also recruit additional staff which we have done," said Deborah Amdur, director of White River Junction VA Medical Center.

The medical Center schedules about 30,000 appointments every year. It has not been flagged for further review by the VA.
