Rice H.S. hit by vandals before graduation

Posted: Updated:

School administrators say it's the time of year when students pull pranks, celebrations turn into capers and rivalries can fuel some strange stuff. But in South Burlington, police are now looking for help figuring out who painted messages all over Rice High School.

Rice High School Principal Reverend Bernard Bourgeois is still stunned by what he saw on Sunday.

"It was very poor taste and very sad," said Rev. Bourgeois.

Police are calling it "major vandalism" at the Catholic School. There were eggs and graffiti all over the building where seniors and their loved ones were about to arrive for graduation.

The Principal says the blue paint was the color of South Burlington High School and included messages like "SB Baseball" and "Payback."

Kristen Kelly: What does that make you think?

Rev. Bourgeois: It makes me think that either somebody from there did it, or somebody wants us to think somebody from there did it. And to be clear, I am not accusing anybody of anything, because I have no idea who did this or where it came from.

He does not think it was Rice students and says South Burlington students do not make sense either. The two baseball teams do not have a particularly hot rivalry.

Graduation went off without a hitch. Rev. Bourgeois says the busy vandals left a mess, but one with a silver lining. 15 staff and volunteers worked quickly to scrub and scrape paint and guests had no idea it had happened.

"One thing that happens here is the Rice community pulls together very quickly and very well," said Rev. Bourgeois.

As for South Burlington High School, the Vice Principal says there is no evidence now that his students are involved, but if some turns up, the school will address the issue appropriately.
