Colleen Bray Scarola offers thanks for community support

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - It was a brutal attack with a baseball bat that left many last fall wondering if Colleen Bray Scarola would make it out of the hospital alive. But now the Burlington mom is on the road to recovery.
"I am working on getting to my full recovery, and I'm working really hard, but I'm making it," said Colleen Bray Scarola.

The Burlington mother suffered severe, life threatening injuries after police say her estranged husband, James Scarola, beat her in their home with an aluminum baseball bat last fall. Their two young children were asleep upstairs.

But now Bray Scarola is undergoing extensive rehabilitation. "I go to OT, occupational therapist, and I go top SLP which is speech language pathologist. We work on my problem, solving and my long term memory," she said.

And she says the outpouring of community support has been overwhelming. A slew of fundraisers have raised tens of thousands of dollars to help her kids while she spent months in the hospital. "I'm so appreciative of everything that everybody has done for me and my kids -- it is incredible. And I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you," she said.

On Monday she was in court for a status conference for James Scarola, who is charged with aggravated attempted murder. The state is requesting a trial date in early November.

"I like to stay connected and updated on what's happening with that case, so that's why I attended," Bray Scarola said.

Bray Scarola told me that she expected this extended timeline--but is pleased with the November trial date. She said she hopes that date sticks.
