Vaulting Over Her Competition

Posted: Updated:
WESTMINSTER, Vt. - Her coaches at Le Studio Gymnastics and Dance call her vaults explosive.

"It's just amazing to see her," Le Studio team gymnastics coach, Brian Post said.

But fifteen year old Maci Prescott didn't just burst onto to the local gymnastics scene. It's been a nine year lift to the top.

"It's just really hard to be great at this sport," Prescott said.  "There's always something to learn."

"Sometimes we want our kids to do it right away," Maci's mother, Phillisa Prescott said.  "But sometimes slow and steady, the turtle does win the race."

That race was won at the end of April when the sophomore at the New England Classical Academy in Claremont won a Level 9 eastern nationals vault championship in Orlando, Florida.

"She just nailed it," Post said.  "She went flying. The first one (vault) was good and probably the second one was the best one I've seen her do."

"This season I finally started landing it," Prescott said.  "It was just getting better and better and I finally won a big competition with it and that was really great."

"We're all very proud of her and I think she surprised herself this year," Phillisa Prescot said.  "I think it sort of rededicated herself to doing better."

After moving to Vermont from Brockton, MA about ten years ago, Maci decided to take up gymnastics after discovering the sport of ballet, wasn't quite for her.

"I just ran as fast as I could and jumped as far as I could and everyone else was trying to be graceful," Prescott said.

"She could pick any sport and be great at it.  We're just glad she picked gymnastics," Le Studio owner, Kathy St. Pierre said.  "She can go as far as she wants. There's no stopping her now."

In college, Maci wants to be a vault specialist as she tries to make a dynamic impact wherever she lands.
