Fiery crash closes part of Interstate 89

Posted: Updated:

A fiery crash on Interstate 89 early Tuesday morning left some drivers delayed for hours.

A tractor-trailer carrying produce was traveling northbound near Bolton around 2:30 a.m., when police say the driver swerved to avoid hitting a deer. Investigators say the driver lost control of the trailer, rammed into the median and it burst into flames.

The trailer was blocking both lanes of traffic.

Vermont State Police closed that part of the Interstate for several hours.

"For this particular case, we had to because the trailer and the trucker were across both lanes spilling diesel fuel; it wasn't safe for traffic. When diesel fuel is on the roadways like that it can be very slippery and it took a large amount of time to get the resources up there to clean it up," Vt. State Police Lt. Garry Scott said.

Police say some drivers saw delays of up to two hours. But by late morning, one lane reopened while VTrans crews cleaned up the fuel. The second lane reopened Tuesday afternoon.

No one was hurt.
