2 survive small plane crash in Vermont

Posted: Updated:

COVENTRY, Vt. (AP) - Investigators are looking into how a small plane crashed in Vermont after performing a routine landing and takeoff.

Both people aboard the Cessna 140 survived Saturday afternoon's crash; they were not injured. The plane came down in a field near the end of a runway at Newport State Airport.

The Caledonian Record reports the plane's landing gear was damaged, causing it to land on its belly.

Vermont Aeronautics Director Guy Rouelle said the plane touched wheels down on the runway. When the pilot sought to take off again, the plane lost the aerodynamic lift of one wing, causing the plane to stall. The plane left the runway, but it pitched at a steep angle to one side.

Rouelle said both people are pilots. Their names haven't been released yet.
