Welch hopes to block FDA aging cheese regulation

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

There’s an update about the controversial Food and Drug Administration rule that could hurt Vermont artisan cheese makers.

Congressman Peter Welch, D-Vermont, hopes to block the regulation that stops producers from aging cheese on wood. Cheese has been aged on wood for hundreds of years, but the FDA worries that wood could contribute to the growth of pathogens and pose a health risk to consumers.

Artisan cheese makers in Vt. and around the country say using wood is critical to the aging process and if enforced, the rule could take some popular cheeses off the market.

Now congressman Welch wants to block the rule by offering an amendment to an FDA funding bill. It would stop the government from enforcing the ban. A representative says Welch has strong bipartisan support. A vote could come this week.
