Program helps at-risk parents reach goals

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

"Being at Lund gave me the opportunity to have a lot of support," Crystal Parent said.

Parent is a mother of two, but today she is also a high school graduate.

"Now I'm stronger than ever and being 25 next Thursday and graduating high school," Parent said, as people cheered for her.

Parent said making the decision to enter the Lund Center's residential program with her children was not an easy one, but she realized it was the only way to change the course of her life.

"It took me coming to Lund to realize like hey, this is your motivation, this is your time, do it," she said.

She lived at Lund for 10 months, working at earning her diploma while also working on being a mom.

"Having your kids on a routine is a very important thing that I didn't know," Parent said. "I thought, hey, I'm doing the same thing every day and that's good for kids is to take a bath, and come home and have snacks at the same time and be put in bed at the same time."

Maghon Luman attended Lund's graduation ceremony Tuesday in a different role than she had three years prior. As a successful graduate and mother now working at the Burlington Community Justice Center, she was a keynote speaker.

"The mistakes that I had made in my past did not define me," Luman said.

Luman says Lund saved her life. She overcame drug addiction and has gone onto not only a job, but a career that she is proud of.

"I knew that I needed to get treatment but I didn't want to leave my daughter. And I was able to stay with her, get the help I needed and build a better life for us," Luman said.

At Tuesday's ceremony, Crystal Parent was recognized with a special award for her efforts.

"While this incredible woman was doing this work on herself, she never faltered on her first priority of being a mom," said Laura May Ackley of the Lund Center.

On her way to a better life of her own.
