170-year-old general store closes

Posted: Updated:

GRAFTON, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire general store that's been in business for almost 170 years has closed.

The Grafton Country Store has been a social hub of the town for years.

The Valley News reports customers had noticed that owner Vinnie Bianco had stopped refilling gas pumps in April, then stopped ordering merchandise and stocking the shelves.

Bianco declined to comment on the business. The closing Wednesday leaves his six employees without jobs.

Sharon Demers, the previous owner, ran the store for 11 years and sold it to Bianco in 2011.

Residents now have to drive down Route 4 to either Canaan or Danbury, whose newly renovated country store reopened last year.
