Gov. Shumlin signs bill to help with energy efficiency

Posted: Updated:
RUTLAND, Vt. - Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a bill into law Wednesday that will help Vermonters make their homes more energy-efficient.

Shumlin toured Mark and Sara Borkowski's "ehome" before signing the bill. He says their energy efficient home is a great example of investing in efficiency and renewable energy.

The new law offers financial incentives for investing in clean heating technologies like cold-climate heat pumps and geothermal pumps. The governor says the legislation builds on the work already being done by Efficiency Vermont and other organizations to weatherize homes and convert to renewable electric generation.

"We can't move fast enough to start to do energy differently, to ensure that our planet is livable for our kids and grand kids," said Shumlin.

Another law the governor will sign Wednesday is designed to make sure other state law are working well.

The government accountability bill would require state agencies to adopt results-based policies to make sure state government is meeting the needs of its citizens.

Review will determine if programs run by state agencies or outside contractors are working as intended.
