Report shows maple production down from last year

Posted: Updated:

Vermont maple producers made less syrup than last year, but it was still one of the best years ever for total production.

A new report from the federal government shows total production at about 1.3 million gallons. That's down about 11 percent from 2013, but that season set a record at nearly 1.5 million gallons.

Overall 2014 was a strong year despite weather challenges, including ice storm damage in December and the late arrival of spring.

Vermont remains far and away the largest maple producer in the country producing about 42 percent of the total crop.
