Rep. Smith to seek another term

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

After lengthy talks with his family and his employer, Rep. Shap Smith says he will seek another term in the Vermont House.

The speaker of the House from Morristown tells WCAX News he filed his petition to get on the ballot this morning.

The Democrat has served as speaker for six years and would like another two-year term. Smith first has to get re-elected in November. Members of the Vermont House would then have to re-elect him in January if he is to serve another stint as speaker.

"I am excited to have conversations with my constituents over the summer and fall and look forward to addressing their needs and concerns in the next legislative session. During my tenure in the House I am proud to have worked on issues such as civil marriage, health care, economic development and education reform and am eager for the opportunity to continue this work," Smith said in a statement.

Smith is an attorney and has a young family. Working out a plan with his employer and his family were big factors in his decision to stay in politics.
