The race for lieutenant governor just got less competitive because Democratic candidate John Bauer is dropping out.
The Jeffersonville man announced his candidacy a month ago and was seeking to qualify for public funding of his campaign. He needed to raise $15,000 in small contributions to qualify for $200,000 in taxpayer dollars to pay for his campaign. Bauer says he didn't reach that total by Thursday's deadline and is dropping out.
That leaves Progressive Dean Corren, who did qualify for public financing in a one-on-one challenge against incumbent Republican Phil Scott.
