PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

Federal agents say a popular North Country doctor and lawmaker tried to get through an airport checkpoint with a gun.

TSA officials say, they stopped Dr. Jonathan Beach with this handgun in his carry-on bag. There was also a clip with six rounds.

An officer spotted the gun as it passed through an X-ray machine.

The sheriff says Beach, who is a Clinton County lawmaker, is not facing any state charges. It turns out Beach grabbed the wrong bag from home before heading to the airport.

"He provided his permit right away, the number of handguns was on there, the serial number was on the permit, we verified the serial number of that gun as being on his permit, there was not a round in the chamber, there was less than 10 rounds as per the safe act. He was all within every regulation for state and local laws so we secured the weapon so he could continue on his flight," Clinton County Sheriff David Favro said.

Beach is still in Maine. He issued a statement thanking the TSA and sheriff's department for how they handled the situation.
