BURLINGTON, Vt. - A Winooski mom is being charged with the murder of her baby son, but it was her boyfriend who was in court Friday. Tyler Chicoine, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of false information to a police officer.

Police say Chicoine initially lied to investigators to protect Nytosha Laforce. Laforce is charged with the murder of her son, 14-month-old Peighton Geraw. They say in initial interviews, Chicoine didn't tell police that he saw Laforce violently slam Peighton's head against the floor on the day that he died.

"Mr. Chicoine is the primary witness and his testimony will be critical to the state's case. Because of that we entered into the plea agreement today essentially giving Mr. Chicoine a probated sentence on a misdemeanor charge. As a result, he should be released from Department of Corrections custody early next week," Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan said.

Donovan says this does not change the state's case against Nytosha Laforce; she is still charged with second-degree murder.
