Plattsburgh hosts weekend fishing tournament

Posted: Updated:

Bass fishing tournaments on Lake Champlain kick off this weekend.

Saturday is the American Bass Anglers Weekend Series in Plattsburgh. It's the first of six bass fishing tournaments hosted by the North Country Chamber of Commerce. Two-hundred anglers will compete for cash prizes.

This catch-and-release tournament has taken place in Plattsburgh for the last 12 years. The fishing tournaments are always welcome in Plattsburgh, where local shops see an increase of traffic.

"The fishing tournaments have a huge impact on our economy, everything from hotels to restaurants to gas stations to the fish and tackle shops," said Kristy Kennedy of the North Country Chamber of Commerce.

"Compete for a minimum of 8 hours. And the boater can have 5 fish, small mouth or large mouth and the co-angler can have 3 fish," said Joe Angelone of American Bass Anglers.

Lake Champlain is currently on Bassmaster's top 100 lakes for bass fishing.
