14th annual Grand Isle Fishing Festival

Posted: Updated:
GRAND ISLE, Vt. - Fishermen of all ages didn't hold back Saturday casting their lines with high hopes. The 14th annual Grand Isle Fishing Festival gave anglers a chance to put their skills to the test. It takes more than just a bucket of bait to make a catch.

"Cast a lot. Just keep reeling and coming in and casting and coming in," said one young angler.

At the Grand Isle Fish hatchery, there was plenty of advice to go around.

"You have to pull up to hook the fish in its mouth, which is right there," points out Kolby Darrah of Burlington.

"The thing to do is to have your pliers with you then you can reach down and tug it out," advises an older fisherman.

But regardless of your expertise, first-timers who came out to Vermont's free fishing day event got a chance to learn everything they needed to know.

"We have 13 educational stations and they go learn a little bit about casting, knot tying, setting the hook, fish ID," said Kristi Roche, she is one of the Fish Culture Technicians at the hatchery.

About 2-thousand rainbow trout and brown trout live in the lake. Kids were able to catch 2 fish.

"We have some fish cleaning guys here that will clean the fish and then we also have fish filleting so we will fillet the fish for people and then they can bring them home," said Roche.

From the lake to the table- cooking techniques for 5 new ways to prepare their catch of the day.
