South Burlington eyes moving 5th graders to middle school

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Fifth graders may be on the move in South Burlington.

The school district held an open forum Wednesday for parents to express their opinion over a proposal to move fifth graders from elementary to middle school.  District employees argue that moving the students will enable them to explore more interests like languages or music. The Colchester school district used to couple fifth graders with other middle schoolers but decided to switch. Colchester's curriculum director Gwen Carmolli says the proposed system would allow their students to grow intellectually.

"It's a really big year in terms of building themselves, in terms of understanding where they came from and who they are in their internal confidence. That sets you up really well for going over to the middle school where you start changing classes. You go from one teacher -- to in their case -- two teachers, and the unified arts teachers, for different classes," Carmolli said.

The district had originally been aiming to implement the 5th grade move in the 2015-2016 school year, but on Wednesday decided to allow more time for discussion.  Read more about the plan here.
