Medical marijuana agreement in NY due by midnight

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - An agreement between the state Senate and Assembly on whether to legalize medical marijuana in New York is due before midnight Monday in order to be voted on before the legislative session ends later this week.

Negotiations between the Cuomo administration and bill sponsors Sen. Diane Savino and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried began on Friday for the Compassionate Care Act.

The measure would allow patients with one of 20 diseases to be administered marijuana under the supervision of a health care professional.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he would sign the law into effect, as long as the measure "makes sense," and includes proper regulation of the drug.

A Siena College of 835 registered voters released Monday found that 62 percent of New Yorkers support legalizing medical marijuana as opposed to 33 percent who oppose the measure.
