WALTHAM, Mass. -

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin joined other New England governors in Massachusetts Tuesday morning to join forces against opiate addiction.

The group met at Brandeis University to talk about how each state is combating a rise in opiate abuse and opiate-related deaths.

New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan says data show that where you see prescription medication abuse, heroin abuse soon follows.

The group hopes working across state borders with strengthen each state's response.

"While we are all addressing opioid addiction independently, we feel we'd be even better at doing so working collaboratively, sharing best practices," said Gov. Deval Patrick, D-Massachusetts.

All the New England governors were at the meeting except Governor Paul LePage of Maine.
