Meningitis B vaccine awaits FDA approval

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

There is an update to the story on a deadly strain of meningitis first reported on WCAX News a few weeks ago.

Channel 3 News has learned the drug company Novartis applied for FDA approval of the first meningitis B vaccine in the United States Tuesday.

Meningitis B is the only strain not covered by vaccine and accounts for one-third of all cases in this country. It is most likely to strike college campuses where students live in close quarters. It was responsible for two large outbreaks at U.S. schools last year.

Bexsero is already approved for use in Europe, Australia and Canada. Officials say a Breakthrough Therapy Designation should expedite the drug's FDA review process in the U.S.
