New plans for Plattsburgh prime property

Posted: Updated:
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

A prime piece of real estate in Plattsburgh is unused and has been for years. Now plans are in the works to either fix up or knock down the Lakeside Apartments.

"They need to take them down, they're definitely an eyesore for the area. A lot of potential for this one little area, they need to do something about it quick," said Jamie Tennian from Plattsburgh.

The unused waterfront property was the home of 200 Plattsburgh residents, but flooding in April 2011 damaged the complex and made it uninhabitable.

"The community was able to absorb the folks from there in various places. That's good we didn't leave people permanently on the street, they're actually in other housing," said Mayor James Calnon, R-Plattsburgh.

According to Mayor Calnon, property owner Collin Niemi got the OK from the Department of Labor to start working on Lakeside. They deemed the property's air quality safe for workers to begin construction.

"One of the things they have to determine is whether knocking it down with a bulldozer would put a bunch of hazardous material in the air, as opposed to taking things down stick by stick, block by block," said Calnon.

Niemi says the property will most likely be residential. As to whether it'll be bigger and better than before, he says he will see what makes sense for him financially.

"He did indicate he would consider selling the property if a local developer really wanted to do something there. Really all options are on the table," said Calnon.

The news of something finally being done with the waterfront property has the people of Plattsburgh thinking about what's to come.

"I'd like to see a park for the kids or something. Something for the kids to do because really there's not much for kids to do around here," said Tennian.

Niemi says he wants to have a plan of action by the end of the summer.
