Two people were taken to the hospital Wednesday after telling rescue crews they were attacked by a bear.

It happened at a camp off Clay Ridge Road in Milton around 4 p.m.

“Burnt to the ground,” that's what Steven Underwood says happened to his Milton deer camp Wednesday. He says it all started Tuesday when he and his distant cousins, Luke and LaDonna, whose last names he doesn't know, were having a regular night up at the camp.

“We had a couple of drinks had a couple of hot dogs over a fire,” said Underwood.

Underwood says he left his cousins at the camp around 5 a.m. Wednesday to head home for a nap and a cup of coffee. And a couple hours later: "Got back up this morning and bear attack and I heard the camp burned down,” said Underwood.

Milton police and fire departments responded. Authorities say two people reported they were both attacked, and then the cabin caught fire. Fire officials say they were taken to the hospital but did not describe the nature of any possible injuries; Underwood says those two were his cousins.

Neighbor Amber Turner saw the aftermath.

“I pulled in my driveway and saw that there was a fire truck behind me and I was like what's going on,” said Turner.

Underwood says he wasn't there for the alleged attack, but knows one thing for sure.

“I lost my deer camp,” Underwood said.

Crews on scene were looking into reports that the bear knocked over the stove and that the campers may have started the fire to make their escape.

Authorities say their investigation is ongoing and denied our request for an on-camera interview.
