Fletcher Allen announces new name

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington has announced its new name.

Fletcher Allen will be soon be "The University of Vermont Medical Center." It's part of a branding strategy to emphasize the hospital's partnership with the university and its research.

Its partner hospitals-- Central Vermont Medical Center, CVPH in Plattsburgh and Elizabethtown Community Hospital-- will add "The University of Vermont Health Network" to their names.

"I think it's going to be a unifying force as any cohesive brand is, and I think more importantly it really will provide confidence and comfort to those seeking care in any of our network affiliates that they can expect the same high quality access to services anywhere that they go where the University of Vermont Health Network is on the door," said Dr. John Brumsted, Fletcher Allen CEO.

Brumsted says the hospital's founders, Fanny Allen and Mary Fletcher, will continue to be honored with their names at the Colchester campus, a new community room, and at other sites within the Burlington facility.

The name change is expected to cost the four partner hospitals $5.7 million.

Fletcher Allen says it will now begin filing with Vermont and New York to get approval for the new name. If approved, the rollout will begin this fall and take up to 1.5 years.
