Man pleads not guilty, insane in hotel stabbing

Posted: Updated:
NORTH HAVERHILL, N.H. (AP) - A Vermont man has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2013 stabbing death of a woman visiting a Littleton, N.H., hotel.

Prosecutors agreed that 38-year-old Rodney Hill of West Danville, Vt., was insane on Jan. 28, 2013, when he randomly attacked 70-year-old Catherine Houghton of San Francisco at the Hampton Inn.

His lawyer says the plea was accepted Thursday by a judge.

Hill told police he believed he was Jesus and that Houghton was the devil or his father out to hurt his family. Houghton, a 1960 graduate and member of the board of trustees of the White Mountain School in Bethlehem, was in town for board meetings.

Hill was sent to the secure psychiatric ward at the New Hampshire State Prison where his status will be reviewed every five years.
