Hand grenade triggers scare in Winooski

Posted: Updated:
WINOOSKI, Vt. - An inert hand grenade caused a scare in Winooski Thursday.

Officials say the owner of a local business came to the fire department with the grenade in a paper bag and explained she wanted to dispose of it.

The staff member she spoke with didn't know if the grenade was active, so the building was evacuated and police were notified. The road was blocked off and the bomb squad was called in.

A member of the bomb squad determined the explosive material had been removed from the grenade and it was not dangerous.

The road has since reopened. No one was injured.

Fire officials say the business owner took a bag of military memorabilia in trade and found the grenade inside.

"We were out on an automobile crash when our dispatcher called and said she had an urgent call for me, and I called back at the fire house, she said somebody walked in and they brought in what appeared to her an explosive device or a hand grenade in a paper bag and set it down and said I don't know what to do with it. It's yours. It was a fake hand grenade. It was a real one at one time," David Bergeron, Winooski Fire Chief.

The Winooski Fire Department said that anyone with such an explosive device should call their local fire department rather than bringing it in.
