Rutland book store closes its doors after 42 years

Posted: Updated:
RUTLAND, Vt. -

It's an end of an era in Rutland. After 42 years, the city's only bookseller is closing its doors.

Lorraine Eaton has been coming to the Book King for all 42 years it's been around.

"When the Book King first opened, of course I was there and I followed it every time it moved," said Eaton from Mendon.

After three location changes and two owners, the Book King settled at 11 Center Street. Now, the only bookstore in Rutland that sells new books is closing. Owner Elizabeth Dulli says she is closing the store because she just couldn't compete with online book sales. Her sister, ED Dulli, helps her run the store. She says, before her sister owned it, she came here with her daughter to shop for books.

"It's hard giving up something that was so part of our past. Yeah, that's the worst," said ED Dulli.

Elizabeth Dulli tells us the biggest challenge she faced was not being able to have books in stock right away, and then customers who wanted the books immediately would order online to get a better price rather than order from the store. She says she just couldn't beat online prices, and other efforts to expand their offerings. Ideas like a community center never seemed to catch on.

Danielle Cormier comes from Proctor to shop at the store.

"It's sad because often the people that work here will suggest a good book for me and help me find something I enjoy," said Cormier.

For those who frequent the store, not having a bookstore that sells new books in Rutland is hard to face.

"This is a tremendous loss to the city," said Eaton.

Book King will taper down its hours and will be open in July on Fridays only. By the end of the month, the store will shut its doors for good.

Rutland also has Bookmobile which sells used books downtown, but Book King was the only book store selling new books.
