Brandon "rocks" for art education

Posted: Updated:
BRANDON, Vt. -

Reporter Julie Kelley: "How long have you lived in Brandon?"

Artist Warren Kimble: "45 years. I came from New Jersey but don't tell anybody!"

And that fun spirit just begins to paint the picture of artist Warren Kimble. As we strolled through his adopted hometown of Brandon, I realized quickly how proud he is of the place he calls home.

"Brandon is a very special place. It's kind of arty at this point, but it's a real Vermont town where people care about other people and about what's going in town, so it all fits," Kimble says.

And what's going on in town right now is rockin' his world. Walk through Brandon and you'll see painted rockers in store windows and displayed on the sidewalks.

Art rocks is the 12th installment of the community arts project here in Brandon. They have found all kinds of ways to raise money for the arts here in this town of about four thousand. But this all started with pigs.

That first fundraiser paid for this building and the Brandon Artists Guild was born.

Reporter: "When you stand in this gallery and think about what it took for this community to create this. How does that make you feel?"

Kimble: "I just got goosebumps."

These days, rocking chairs have the prime spots in the gallery.

"Now this chair had this carving and one of our artists carved the seat to match this," he says. "And this one over here, obviously they're old rockers I'd say 1850 or 1860."

Reporter: "Where did you guys find the rockers?"

Kimble: "We went to auctions and people donated them."

They restored them and then painted them, sometimes adding elements like these birds or his own fish.

Reporter: "Now when you look at a rocking chair in its original state. What makes you go ... I think I'll throw a fish on there?"

Kimble: "Artists are crazy!"

Crazy creative, which is why they hope you'll take a seat and rock awhile.

"We have ten of these and it says, have a seat compliments of the Brandon Artists Guild. Art rocks Brandon. Hand painted rocking chairs auction, we always advertise the auction, August 23rd at the Brandon town hall," he says.

And if that doesn't get your attention, Kimble and his fellow artists hope this will! They spent Friday evening painting this Giant Rocking Chair, which is sitting outside Café Provence. Like us, he says, people won't be able to resist jumping up for a pic!

The money raised supports the arts in Brandon and pays for art supplies for eight schools in the area.

So, why the rocking chairs? They wanted a theme that could tie in music to. The chamber of commerce and town both have concerts throughout the summer.
