At Montpelier Recreation Field Friday night, was the son of a future Hall of Fame pitcher. The Mountaineers opponent that night, Laconia, has Mariano Rivera Junior on the roster. Rivera Jr., a starting pitcher, was recently drafted by the New York Yankees in the 29th round. Rivera Jr. realizes he'll always have to talk about his famous father, but he's more concerned with just getting better as he plays in the New England College Baseball League this summer.
"I've learned to say that I'm not the same as him (Rivera Sr.). I will never be him. I'm me. Whatever God gives me, it's what I have," Rivera Jr. said. "There's no particular goal I've set just to get better and improve on my abilities, work hard day in and day out and God willing it will come and hope it shows this season for my school."
Laconia lost to the Mountaineers Friday night, 16-9. Rivera Jr. did not pitch in the game.?
