MARLBORO, Vt. (AP) - A bid by a volunteer group to buy a former general store in Marlboro, Vermont, has fallen through.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports the Marlboro Community Store Working Group had a purchase and sale agreement with the owner of the former "Sweetie's Market and Deli" on Route 9. The group worked for about 18 months to raise money.
A few weeks ago, the owner set a June 13 deadline for the group to come up with the money. The group met last week to concede that their plan to open a community run co-op would probably not happen at the store.
Group member Dan MacArthur says they still want to start a co-op, and they'll keep looking for a place. MacArthur said uncertainty over the store's ownership delayed fundraising efforts.
