Family fun at Half Moon State Park

Posted: Updated:
HUBBARDTON, Vt. - Sharon Meyer continues her tour of Vermont State Parks with a visit to Half Moon Pond State Park in Hubbardton.
Half Moon Pond State Park has nice swimming, boating -- and especially fishing. There are also opportunities for wildlife viewing on the park's interconnecting trails.

In addition to Half Moon, the area hosts Bomoseen State Park, where there is another great beach, more picnic areas and more camping. This park, on shores of Lake Bomoseen, is big enough for motorboats as well as kayaks and canoes.  Also nearby is Glen Lake, which is a less developed lake.

Vermont State Parks' Sarah Clarke shared some tips for campsite family activities.

Sharon Meyer:  One of the best parts about camping is getting the kids outside and away from the screens, and you've got some great suggestions on things to do with kids to keep them active  -- and of course many of these state parks are on rivers and streams and places where they can go fishing and boating and swimming and so forth. But you have some great ideas on what to do in the campsite.

Sarah Clarke: Yes, one of the things that we like to do is have the kids build little fairy houses around the campsite, using things that they find from leaves, different kinds of grass, little twigs. It's a lot of fun. I think probably the most fun activity that I've done at the campsite -- a little unexpected -- is actually make ice cream. The kids get a work out -- you can bring a hand crank machine from home -- they get a work out and then there is a sweet treat at the end. Of course for me, I love to bring a whole bunch of balls -- soccer balls, baseballs, footballs, bats, gloves -- all of those kinds of things, so that as we are going throughout the park throughout the day we're having fun. And then when it starts to get dark out, flashlight tag is a big favorite. Of course you've got flashlights with you and the kids will have lots of fun around your campsite playing flashlight tag. It always amazes me too, how often people can stay entertained just sitting around a fire and staring at it.

Sharon Meyer: Yes, just watching it.

Sarah Clarke: It's the best part about camping.

Sharon Meyer: Yes, nice and warm.

Sarah Clarke: Another fun thing at Vermont State Parks is Venture Vermont which is basically an outdoor scavenger hunt that includes outdoor activities. You do he activity, take a picture of yourself, send it in and once you collect enough points, you receive a fun gold coin that gives you free days entry for the rest of this season and all of next.
