Detainee attacks fellow inmate with pen

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - A violent attack in criminal court has a local man now facing multiple attempted murder charges.

Twenty-one year old Chad Brown allegedly stabbed a fellow court detainee with a pen while awaiting arraignment in a separate case. Brown was in court Monday morning for an attempted first degree murder charge. Police say he tried to stab his sister with a knife on Sunday at a home on Venus Avenue in Burlington.

While in the basement holding cell of Chittenden County Criminal Court Monday, police say he lunged at a fellow detainee and stabbed him in the neck with a pen. Documents reveal the victim picked up a chair to defend himself.

"Obviously this is highly unusual to have occurred.  I can't think of another time where an assault like this has occurred. My understanding is the injuries are not significant, so that's a good thing. Nonetheless this is a serious case that will be investigated and prosecuted," said Chittenden County State's Attorney TJ Donovan.

Police say both men were shackled at the legs, but had access to pens to fill out paperwork in the holding cell. Brown will be arraigned on this additional attempted murder charge Tuesday. The victim of the attack was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
