BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont's largest hospital is getting a new name and Gov. Peter Shumlin says it's a smart idea.

Fletcher Allen Health Care is becoming the University of Vermont Medical Center. Administrators say the point is to emphasize the hospital's connection with UVM and its research. The name change is expected to cost Fletcher Allen's four partner hospitals $5.7 million over the next two years.

The governor says he supports the new brand strategy.

"We know that the University of Vermont is one of the job engines for Vermont, in health care and many, many other sectors, including chipmaking. So, I think any way Fletcher Allen can modernize their brand to be associated with one of the great research universities in America is good for Fletcher Allen and is good for Vermont," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

If approved, the name rollout will begin this fall.
