Vermont conference focuses on autism

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Autism research and diagnosis were on the forefront in South Burlington Tuesday.

It was Day Two of the 17th Annual Summer Institute on Autism Spectrum Disorders, a five-day conference hosted by the University of Vermont. UVM invites multiple speakers to offer families affected by autism advice on research, development and awareness. Conference speakers Tuesday highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, especially in preschool-aged children.

"Really what it is we've been doing better at diagnosis, we're doing diagnosis earlier. And then with the recent CDC study that said there was 1 in 68 children with autism, then it became more important," said Patty Prelock of UVM.

The conference continues through Friday at the Double Tree in South Burlington.
