10-year-old arrested for bringing pocketknife to school

Posted: Updated:

The Clinton County Sheriff says a 10-year-old was arrested after he brought a pocketknife to school. Authorities would not say at which Clinton County school the incident occurred.

The 10-year-old was allegedly showing off the knife to another student when a teacher saw, confiscated the weapon and called police. The boy is charged with menacing, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of a weapon, and assault. Despite the severity of those charges, Clinton County Sheriff Dave Favro says this is not a criminal case. It's a civil case designed to get the boy and his family help.

"The need for some intervention, for program services, for some help from outside agencies, and to assist the school with keeping behaviors governed. So that's why you take this type of action so that you can make sure you get them into family court and you can get some assistance to provide the proper services that are needed," Favro said.

The boy's case will be heard in family court at the Clinton County Probation Department.
