Abenaki Heritage weekend celebrated in Vergennes

Posted: Updated:

If you're looking for something educational to do this weekend, the 7th annual Abenaki Heritage weekend is going on at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes.

The Abenaki have lived here for thousands of years, and were among the first navigators on Lake Champlain. The events of the weekend are a celebration of Abenaki history, both past and present.

"It's a gathering of Abenaki people who tell and share their own stories, history, dance, life ways, traditions, looking at the whole sweep of time, not just the distant past," says Eloise Beil with the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.

About 500 people participated last year, and organizers are hoping for an even better turnout this year. For more information on this event, you can visit: http://www.lcmm.org/museum_info/native-american-encampment.html
